Review your keywords - you never know what you'll find!

I regularly read the blog of Duane Jackson, MD of KashFlow - because it tends to offer interesting insight into the life and times of a Software as a Service company. He recently wrote a post entitled "SEO is no substitute for a marketing plan" - which is well worth a read.

I'm not going to discuss the part which SEO should play in your marketing plan - we'll save that for another time. Instead, I'm going to review the keywords/keyphrases which have brought visitors to our own website - a useful exercise and something you should do regularly (at least once every couple of months).

Based on the last six months data in Google Analytics, our top 5 most popular searches:

1. how much does it cost to create an e commerce webiste uk
We get a lot of variations on this one - normally bringing visitors to an article which we published about the importance of evaluation cost in terms of value when looking at eCommerce. Interesting this is the most common variant - WITH the typo!

2. sp executes slower than expected sql
Again, lots of hits for variations on this, leading people to our set of articles on SQL Server Optimization.

3. web development hampshire
No real explanation needed!

4. seo hampshire
This one is also quite logical!

5. mattched it
Frankly I would be upset if we didn't rank well for our own name (terrible pun included), but the number and frequency of searches on our name does surprise me on occasion.

And to lighten the mood, the top 5 strangest:

1. a) product features, functionality and benefits.
This is an old one, which we no longer rank for - however, during the time we did, it received more than a few hits!

2. give three planning cases
Oddly, this leads you to another article - Starting an Online Shop Part 3, but what I really want to know is - who are they expecting us to give planning cases to anyway?

3. cleaning websites
Of the many services we offer, a quick shine & polish isn't really one of them - maybe it should be!

4. 6shopping
Will lead you to Starting an Online Shop Part 6, but still it's a very wierd thing to type into a search engine.

5. articles on amazon barriers
Verily, our article "Trust Barriers and your Online Shop" is interesting and mentions both (trust) barriers as well as Amazon, but I suspect that "Amazon Barriers" are something slightly different.

So there you have it! When did you last review your own search traffic? Were there any comical keywords you'd care to share? Personally I think ours are a little dull - there are no truly hillarious clangers there!

If you've never done a review - maybe you should look into doing one sooner, rather than later - who knows who is (or isn't) finding your website!

That's great.

We were thinking of publishing the SEO data too. I think you may have formalised a way to do it.

Pleased we get a lot for:
"social responsibility in small businesses".

Matt you are brave, not sure I would be giving that information away! Having said that if you have unearthed any killer secret keywords you would not publish them!

@Joe H - not so brave really, since this is more what Google Analytics reports rather than what we aim at!

I might not be quite so forthright if I was publishing a list of the keywords that convert well for us and represent good ROI - those are very valuable indeed! :)
