Step back and think - do you have the right website?

5th June 2009

We often talk to clients about the suitability of their business website - is the right impression given, does it meet their needs - and so forth. Almost everyone, if asked these questions, will say yes - particularly if the website design was created in-house, by a family member or friend (very common in the small business world).

However, this is not always an objective assessment. When you run a business, especially in todays climate, it's only natural to be a little defensive - don't let this cloud your judgement. An unprofessional looking website could damage your business, even if your business is not technology related.

This is our call for you to take a reality check - step back from your own personal beliefs about your web presence and try to look at the big picture. Put yourself into the frame of mind of a (potential) customer. Ask some of your trusted friends (if you're sure they will be honest). Perform a small survey. Get opinions from people who have no bias (not involved with the business, not web developers and not the competition!). Build up a picture of how people feel about and react to your website and then act on it.

So often the aims and goals are not sought out when potential clients choose a company who does web pages for £5 or cheap as chips, they think they will get the same deal for those low kinds of prices. Often companies touting for work with low prices do not offer value for money, sure they offer a low price but often fail to deliver quality pages which have had research, proper usability testing with the clients content and aims and goals. Then you end up with the old scenario of "My website is not making enough sales what can I do" - If potential clients took their websites seriously they would see a need to use MattchedIT services or MultiLayer Design Services in order to get a website they are happy with that can give them that success.

It's often the case that clients simply don't understand what they're buying - and they can be easily duped.

A pet hate of mine at the moment is the Indian link building so-called "business". They promise the client thousands of links. And how do they achieve that? By spamming forums and making spammy blog comments. Grrr.

If the forum or blog isn't properly moderated and such rubbish isn't deleted, the link builder can then report back to the client that they've achieved the task of creating x backlinks.

Oh, don't mind me, I've just got a bee in my bonnet about this. But maybe it's a subject worth writing about on MattchedIT (if you haven't already).
